Growing & Maintenance Tips for Hanging Basket: Fuchsia
Fuchsia thrive in partial shade. Too much shade and they will stop blooming but too much sun and the leaves will get sunburned. They prefer warm temperatures so avoid putting them outside too early in the spring. Night time temperatures need to be above 10℃.
Keep Fuchsia protected from the wind.
Keep Fuchsias evenly moist. Since the fuchsia plants are quite large, they do use a lot of water on hot days and may require twice a day watering.
We recommend fertilizing these hanging baskets weekly with a balanced fertilizer like 20-20-20. Adding a slow release fertilizer on top of the soil is also recommended if weekly fertilizing is not practical. Follow manufacturers instructions for rates.
Fuchsias must be deadheaded to continue flowering. Be sure to take off the green seed pod at the top end of the flower when you take the drying flower off. If you don’t, the Fuchsia will divert its energy from flower production to seed production.
Sometimes it is hard to distinguish between a seed pod and a new bud if the flowers have already fallen off. Seed pods are hard and have a flat or dimpled end. Flower buds are soft and have a pointy end.
The branches of the Fuchsia can be pinched back to maintain the plant's size and shape.
