Growing & Maintenance Tips for Amelanchier alnifolia 'Thiessen'

Saskatoon berries look much like blueberries, but are more closely related to the apple family. They are a wonderful sweet berry, having a slight nutty flavour. Mature bushes produce white flowers each spring and berries can be harvested late June to July. Also known as Prairie Berry, Juneberry and Serviceberry, they are adaptable to many growing climates, from sea level to mountain peaks. Bushes are shade tolerant, but produce larger yields with more direct sunlight. They are self-pollinating and they may fruit for over 30 years. Saskatoon berries are an excellent source of iron, magnesium, potassium, calcium, and are high in anti-oxidants, ideal for eating fresh, in desserts, jams, frozen or preserved.
